Play to Adapt

Games to Build Climate Adaptation Strategies

Held at the Queensland Academy of Science, Mathematics, and Technology, the Play to Adapt Workshop set a challenge for students to develop an adaptation strategy for their city in response to future climate impacts.
How to Play
Over the class session, students were prompt to make as many adaptation strategies as possible by using the coloured hexagon blocks to avoid catastrophic climate impacts on their city.  Students would need to arrange, stack and make visual patterns using the blocks to help them build their strategies. The blocks included four different categories: climate impacts, sector blocks, adaptation blocks and adaptation method.

By Joining the blocks the students would explore climate impacts on different sectors of the city (transport, energy, food, humans and water) by reading the information on the blocks. Students would then match those blocks with the blue adaptation blocks and document it on the adaptation template. The more time the students spent with the blocks, the more connections were made and complex strategies were developed.

To create the hexagon blocks, plywood was painted and designs were laser etched into the paint. The information was also laser etched onto the back of each block.
